I’m not a weather forecaster, and this post definitely isn’t about politics, but it certainly feels like Long Island’s weather patterns have changed.

When I was a child, we used to have four distinct seasons. Now they seem to blur together with hotter stretches in summer, longer cold spells, heavy rain, strong winds and storms that can cause significant damage with very little warning. Everyone complains about the weather, but now it seems like we really have something to complain about!

What does changing and unpredictable weather mean for your homeowners insurance?

It may mean it’s time for a coverage review.

It's quite probable that over the years your home’s value may have increased. Also, the cost of materials and labor has changed, and the amount of coverage that made sense several years ago may not be enough to repair or rebuild your home today. Without adequate coverage, you might find yourself with some big expenses just to repair the damage from the storm. A conversation with your insurance agent can help you understand:

  • Whether your current dwelling coverage is adequate

  • What types of storm and water damage your policy covers and what it doesn’t

  • Whether your deductibles still make sense

  • If additional coverage or endorsements should be considered

  • Whether recent improvements to your home need to be reflected in your policy

I think we can all agree that no one can accurately predict what Mother Nature will do next, but you can make sure you understand your coverage before you need to use it.

A quick insurance review today could potentially save you considerable expense and stress down the road. Please let me know if I can assist.
