“I Don’t Need Renters Insurance.”(Famous last words.)

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this one and it’s usually followed by something like, “I don’t own much,” or “My landlord’s policy covers me, right?”
If you’ve ever thought or said those words, you’re not alone, but the truth is your landlord’s insurance only covers the building, not your stuff and definitely not your liability if something happens inside your apartment.
Renters insurance is one of those things that sounds complicated but isn’t. And it’s one of the most affordable ways to protect yourself.
Your “Stuff” Is Worth More Than You Think
Most people underestimate how much they own.
Take a mental walk through your place and you’ll probably see your laptop, phone, TV, couch, wardrobe, cookware, shoes, and maybe that bike you love. Add it up and it’s easy to hit $20,000 or more without realizing it.
If your neighbor leaves a candle burning, or a pipe burst while you’re away, your landlord’s insurance will fix the building. But replacing everything you own? That’s on you.
Renters insurance steps in so you don’t have to start over from scratch.
It’s Not Just About Stuff," It's About Liability
Renters insurance also protects you if someone gets hurt in your home.
Imagine your friend trips over a rug, breaks a wrist, and decides to sue (because their medical bills are high, and their lawyer suggests it). Without renters insurance, you’re on the hook.
With it? You’re protected. It covers legal fees, medical bills, and settlements, which means one bad day doesn’t turn into financial disaster.
What About When You’re Not Home?
Renters insurance follows you.
If your laptop gets stolen from your car, or your suitcase disappears from a hotel, many policies cover that too. It’s like having a safety net that travels with you.
“Yeah, But It’s Probably Expensive…”
Nope. In most cases, renters insurance costs less than a few lattes a month, often around $15–25.
For that, you’re buying peace of mind, financial protection, and one less thing to worry about if life decides to get messy (and it always does).
What It Doesn’t Cover
Transparency matters, so here’s the fine print in plain English and that is renters insurance won’t cover every possible event. Floods, earthquakes, and certain high-value items like fine jewelry or art may need separate policies or endorsements.
That’s where talking with an agent (hi, that’s me) makes a difference. We can tailor coverage so you’re not paying for what you don’t need, but you’re also not left vulnerable where it matters most.
Think of It Like a Safety Net You Hope You’ll Never Need
You buy renters insurance the same way you buy a fire extinguisher, hoping you’ll never have to use it, but if the worst happens, you’ll be very, very glad it’s there.
I’ve seen clients lose everything in a fire and get back on their feet quickly because they were covered. I’ve also seen others who didn’t have it, and their recovery took years, emotionally and financially.
The difference between those two stories? About twenty bucks a month.
So, Do You Still Think You Don’t Need It?
If you rent, you need renters insurance. Period.
It’s quick to set up, easy to understand, and gives you protection for the things (and people) that matter.
If you’d like me to walk you through what it covers, how much you might need, or even just check if you’re paying too much, reach out. I promise no jargon, no pressure, no scare tactics.
Just a real conversation about keeping you protected.
