Being on Instagram Is Not an Ego Thing. It’s a Business Thing.

Trust me, I’ve heard it all.
“How many times a day do you post?”
“Aren’t you constantly on social media?”
“Do your kids mind?”
Then there are the people on the other side who say, “I wish I could do what you do on Instagram,” or “I wish I knew how to make Instagram work for my business.”
I get it. Instagram can seem overwhelming and if you’re seeing someone frequently in your feed or Stories, you might assume they simply love the attention.
Before I go any further, let me clear up one very important thing and that is being on social media is definitely not an ego thing for me. It’s a business thing. It’s about visibility, recognition, connections, introductions, referrals, and, ultimately, growing my business.
Much of my business comes through referrals, and in order to be referred, I need people to know and remember me. That doesn’t mean popping up constantly saying, “Hey, look at me,” it means showing up and adding value.
I host events and volunteer actively. I connect people and provide opportunities for others to enhance their own businesses, and yes, I share these things on social media.
What happens is people get to know me. They learn what I care about, what I value, how I work and what’s important to me. They see my family, my business, my community involvement, and some of the less-than-perfect moments too.
By the time someone reaches out to me, or someone refers a friend, colleague, or family member to me, they often already have a pretty good sense of who I am. That’s incredibly valuable in a business like insurance, where trust matters.
Instagram keeps me top of mind. Each post or Story gives someone another small glimpse into who I am and reminds them that I’m here when they need me.
Yes, it takes time, and here’s something else I’m very transparent about, I have help.
I have a full-time VA who handles much of the posting and the creative aspects of my Stories and Reels. I don’t think it would be nearly as easy for me to maintain the presence I have without him, but the strategy, personality, and purpose behind what you see are very much mine.
I learned how Instagram works. I took the time to understand the platform and realized it was a great fit for what I was trying to accomplish, and I’m not hoarding what I’ve learned.
I run a Bootcamp for insurance agents and Realtors who want to harness the power of Instagram for their own businesses, and I teach them what works, what doesn’t and how to use the platform strategically rather than simply posting for the sake of posting.
So, egomaniac? Nope. Busy businesswoman using a very powerful business tool? Absolutely.
