Why My Personal Brand Has Been One of My Greatest Business Assets

When people ask me how I've built my business, they often expect me to talk about marketing strategies, lead generation, or social media algorithms. But the truth is far simpler and much more personal. My business is derived almost entirely from referrals. And those referrals don't come from a clever campaign or a perfectly timed ad. They come from relationships, from what I give and who I am.
That's where personal brand comes in and why I believe it has been one of the most powerful keys to my success.
I know "personal brand" can sound like a buzzword and many people don't like to use it, but to me, it's anything but. My personal brand isn't something I manufactured in a boardroom or crafted with a marketing team. It's simply the most authentic version of me, put on display for the world to see. It reflects my personal preferences, my values, quirks, and the qualities I've made the cornerstone of my life. It shows people what I hold near and dear to my heart, and I genuinely believe that's exactly what people want to know before they do business with someone.
When someone refers you to a friend, colleague, or client, they're not just vouching for your professional credentials, they're vouching for you. A strong personal brand communicates YOU before you ever shake someone's hand or jump on a Zoom call.
I know a lot of people in business are hesitant to let the personal in because there's this old-school idea that keeping things strictly professional means keeping things separate. Don't show too much or get too real. I understand that instinct, but I've never subscribed to it. I think there is absolutely a positive in letting people see who you truly are, and I've watched that approach pay dividends in ways I never could have predicted.
When I show up on social media, at events, and in conversations, I show up as me. The things I'm passionate about, causes I care about, and the way I live my life outside of work are all part of the picture and I've found that people connect with that. They remember it and when the time comes to refer someone or seek out a partner, they think of the person they feel like they know, not just the person with the impressive résumé.
I don't show up, or build relationships because I'm calculating a business return. That would undermine everything. I do it because it's genuinely who I am and how I want to move through the world. The business that comes from it is a beautiful byproduct but it was never the motivation. I think people can feel that difference, and I think it matters.
Your personal brand, when it's real, tells a story that no marketing brochure can tell. It says: here is what I value, how I operate, and what you can expect from me. That's a powerful thing to communicate and it builds a kind of trust that no advertising budget can buy.
Don't be afraid to let people see you. The real you is not a liability in business. It is, without question, one of your greatest assets.
