What’s the Best Car to Buy If I Want the Lowest Insurance Premium?

One of the most common questions I hear from clients is: “What car should I buy if I want the lowest insurance premium?”
If keeping your insurance costs under control is important, especially here in New York and on Long Island, the answer may surprise you.
Insurance companies don't simply look at the sticker price of a vehicle. They evaluate dozens of factors when determining your premium, including repair costs, theft rates, safety features, accident history, and even how often certain vehicles are involved in claims.
Generally Speaking, Boring Is Beautiful
The vehicles that typically have the lowest insurance premiums are practical, family-friendly cars that are known for safety and reliability. Some examples include:
Honda CR-V
Subaru Forester
Toyota RAV4
Honda Civic
Toyota Corolla
Subaru Outback
Hyundai Tucson
These vehicles tend to perform well in safety testing, have readily available replacement parts, and aren't commonly associated with high-speed driving or expensive repairs.
Sports Cars and Luxury Vehicles Cost More
If you're considering a sports car, luxury SUV, or high-performance vehicle, expect higher insurance costs. Why?
Insurance companies know these vehicles:
Cost more to repair
Have more expensive replacement parts
Are more frequently stolen
Are involved in more costly claims
A luxury vehicle may only cost a few thousand dollars more to purchase, but the insurance premium can be significantly higher year after year.
Why New York Drivers Pay More Attention to Insurance Costs
New York already ranks among the more expensive states for auto insurance. Long Island drivers often face even higher premiums due to traffic congestion, population density, accident frequency, and repair costs. That's why choosing the right vehicle can make a meaningful difference.
I often encourage clients to get insurance quotes before they buy a car. A vehicle that seems like a bargain at the dealership can become much more expensive once insurance is factored in.
Safety Features Matter
Many modern safety features can help reduce insurance costs. Look for vehicles equipped with:
Automatic emergency braking
Blind spot monitoring
Lane departure warning
Adaptive cruise control
Anti-theft systems
Backup cameras
These features can reduce the likelihood of accidents and claims, which insurance companies appreciate.
The Driver Matters Too
Even the "cheapest" vehicle to insure won't guarantee a low premium. Insurance companies also consider:
Your driving record
Age and driving experience
Annual mileage
Credit-based insurance factors where permitted
Location
Prior insurance history
In other words, a safe driver in a Toyota Corolla will typically pay less than a driver with multiple violations driving the exact same car.
My Recommendation
If your goal is to keep insurance costs as low as possible, focus on a reliable sedan or compact SUV with strong safety ratings and moderate repair costs. Before signing any purchase agreement, talk with your insurance agent and request quotes on several vehicles you're considering. Spending a few minutes comparing insurance costs today could save you hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars over the life of the vehicle.
If you're shopping for a new car and would like help comparing insurance costs, I'd be happy to provide quotes and help you make an informed decision before you buy.
