As the year winds down, I’ve been reflecting on what’s helped me grow both personally and professionally. Spoiler alert: it’s not about chasing competition or trying to "win" over others in my field. It’s about collaboration.
In a world that often pushes us to focus on being better, faster, or stronger than the person next to us, I’ve found the opposite approach, working with others, sharing generously, and lifting people up, to be the most rewarding. This mindset isn’t just good for the soul; it’s been incredible for my business too.
Collaboration Breeds Success
When I started as an Allstate insurance agent, I knew one thing for certain: success in this business comes down to relationships. But here’s the key, it’s not just relationships with clients, but also with other professionals in my community.
Some might look at other agents, brokers, or entrepreneurs and think, They're my competition. But that’s not how I see it. I believe there’s enough room for everyone to succeed. Instead of competing, I reach out to connect. I share insights, swap ideas, and even refer business to those who might be a better fit for a specific client.
And guess what? That generosity has come back tenfold. Not only have I received referrals in return, but I’ve also built a reputation as someone who’s trustworthy, approachable, and genuinely invested in helping others. That’s the kind of word-of-mouth you can’t buy, and it only grows stronger when you prioritize collaboration over competition.
The Spirit of Generosity
The holidays remind us of the joy in giving, and this doesn’t just mean gifts. Being generous with your time, knowledge, and resources creates a ripple effect that benefits everyone.
For instance, I’m a big believer in networking events, not as a way to “sell” but as an opportunity to connect. Whether it’s helping someone find the right marketing partner, brainstorming with a fellow business owner about a challenge, or simply being a sounding board, these moments of generosity create bonds.
I’ve also collaborated on community events, co-hosted webinars, and partnered with other local businesses for promotions. These efforts aren’t just about driving sales, they’re about building trust and showing people that I care about the community, not just the bottom line.
Leading by Example
There’s another reason this approach matters to me, and that’s my kids. I want them to see that success doesn’t have to come at someone else’s expense. I want them to learn that being kind, helpful, and open to collaboration will take them far in life, not just professionally, but personally too.
In a world that can sometimes feel cutthroat, teaching my girls the value of generosity and teamwork is one of the greatest gifts I can give them.
Happy holidays, and here’s to a new year filled with kindness, success, and meaningful connections!
