Personal Branding and Why It Is Important

Who are you?

No really, who are you? In a world where polished images and carefully curated personas often take center stage, the value of being real cannot be overstated—especially in business.

As an insurance professional, I’ve learned that authenticity is not just a buzzword but a powerful tool that can deepen connections, foster trust, and ultimately drive business success.

Here's how having a strong personal brand has made a difference in my career and how it can help you do the same.

Building Genuine Trust

In the insurance industry, trust is the cornerstone of client relationships. When clients entrust you with their insurance needs, they're not just buying a policy—they're investing in your integrity and reliability.

By being open about who I am, both personally and professionally, I've built a level of trust that goes beyond the usual client-provider dynamic.

Sharing my experiences as a single mom in a blended family, for instance, has allowed clients to see me as more than just a businessperson. They see someone who understands the complexities of life, someone who’s been through challenges similar to their own. (Ask me about my house fire that destroyed my home.) This information reassures them that I’m someone they can rely on, not just for insurance advice but for understanding and support during difficult times.

Enhancing Business Relationships

Having a personal brand doesn’t just strengthen client relationships—it also enhances connections with business partners. In an industry where collaboration is key, being open and honest fosters stronger, more productive partnerships. When you’re real about your strengths, weaknesses, and goals, you create an environment where mutual respect and trust can flourish.

Let me be clearer, my business success is, in part derived from the relationships I have with other insurance professionals and referral partners in key industries.

When partners know that I’m willing to be honest and vulnerable, they’re more likely to reciprocate, leading to partnerships built on a solid foundation of trust and shared values. This encourages long-term, mutually beneficial relationships.

Humanizing Being Human

In an increasingly digital world, where much of our communication happens online, it’s easy for business interactions to feel impersonal. By showing up as your true self on social media and other platforms, you humanize your brand and create connections that resonate on a deeper level.

For me, this meant sharing not just the highlights of my professional life but also the moments that make me human—balancing school drop-offs with meetings, volunteering in the community, and even the occasional parenting mishap. These glimpses into my life have made me more relatable to my audience, reminding them that behind the insurance expertise is a person who understands their world.

Fostering a Positive Impact

Being transparent and real doesn’t just benefit your business; it also allows you to make a positive impact on others. By sharing your story, you can inspire and uplift those around you, whether it’s your clients, colleagues, or even your children.

For example, my daughters have seen me navigate the challenges of building a business while raising a family. They’ve seen me embrace my vulnerabilities and turn them into strengths. This has not only shaped their perception of what it means to be a strong, successful woman but has also empowered them to be authentic in their own lives.

In the end, it’s not just about what you offer as a professional but who you are as a person that makes the real difference.
