Curing the Winter Doldrums

Just about this time of year, I start to get sick of Winter. It’s been cold for too long, and spending time outdoors requires too many layers of clothing and occasionally more stamina than I have.

The holidays are over, and the next few months seem to be a waiting game for Spring.

But, playing a waiting game, being lethargic and having the “blahs” is not my style.

I’ve discovered that it isn’t too difficult to fight off the winter doldrums. Here’s what I do. Maybe it can help you as well:

It might be counter intuitive, and I often drag my feet, but spending time outdoors is an immediate mood elevator. It can be a brisk 10-minute walk all alone, or a short (or long) run with a friend, but the fresh air really does serve to cast away the cobwebs and get me feeling more positive about my day.

There’s nothing like a good meal especially when it’s cold. I love to go out with friends and family and spend a few hours in a restaurant, laughing, talking, drinking wine, and feeling a sense of contentment come over me.

Burning scented soy candles helps to make my house feel cozy and the scent always brings a smile to my face.

It’s important to have special event to look forward to and these can be a vacation to a warm tropical destination, theater tickets or a weekend in an Airbnb. It doesn’t have to be exotic, expensive, or distant, having something special on the calendar is what counts.

Buy a new piece of clothing that makes you feel good. It can be warm and cozy for the current weather, or light and summery for what lies ahead.

Let’s remember the months are going by quickly and soon we are going to see the first signs of spring. I keep that in mind every time I feel myself getting too cranky.

Do you have any tips you’d like to share?
